The Federal Government of Nigeria has responded to recent changes in visa issuance policies by the United States and the United Arab Emirates, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with both nations amid rising concerns among Nigerian travelers.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to engage constructively with the affected foreign governments and ensure compliance with Nigeria’s international obligations.
The U.S. government, in its official communication to Nigeria, attributed its revised visa policy to the increasing rate of visa overstays by Nigerian nationals and the challenges in verifying applicants’ records. The U.S. clarified that the changes form part of a global review of its visa reciprocity policy, which can affect visa validity periods and the number of entries permitted.
In reaction, President Tinubu ordered immediate inter-agency coordination to improve identity verification processes and enhance cooperation with international partners. He emphasized the importance of Nigerian citizens respecting the immigration laws of host countries, urging them to protect the integrity of the privileges granted by foreign authorities.
On the situation with the United Arab Emirates, the Nigerian government clarified that it has yet to receive any official notice regarding a policy shift. Nonetheless, it acknowledged that visa issuances to Nigerian applicants are gradually being resumed. The President praised the UAE for its continued diplomatic engagement and described the relationship between the two nations as constructive and respectful.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad, Tinubu pledged to continue promoting the dignity, rights, and mobility of Nigerian citizens worldwide. This is in line with his administration’s 4-D foreign policy approach—Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Dialogue.
“The Federal Government will continue to pursue the best possible outcomes for all Nigerians living or traveling abroad,” the statement read.
This development comes as concerns mount over rising restrictions faced by Nigerian travelers globally. Analysts view the government’s calm but firm approach as a necessary step in balancing diplomatic engagement with national interest.
