An Open Letter to His Excellency, Asiwaju Gboyega Oyetola, CON, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and Apex Leader of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, on the Need to Uphold Fairness, Equity and Democratic Tradition in the Osun East Senatorial District Consensus Arrangement.

Your Excellency sir,

With utmost respect and deep loyalty to the progressive ideals which you have consistently represented over the years, I write this open letter as a concerned stakeholder and committed member of the All Progressives Congress in Osun East Senatorial District. This letter is borne out of genuine concern over the ongoing discussions and political permutations surrounding the proposed consensus arrangement for the Osun East Senatorial District ahead of the forthcoming electoral process. As loyal party members who have invested heavily in the growth and stability of our great party, we believe it is necessary to respectfully call your attention to certain issues capable of affecting the unity, credibility and future electoral strength of our party in the district.

Your Excellency sir, history and political records remain very clear and cannot be altered. Since the return of democratic governance in 1999, Osun East Senatorial District has maintained an unwritten but respected political culture where no individual occupies the senatorial seat beyond two terms. Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa represented the district from 1999 to 2003, Senator Iyiola Omisore served from 2003 to 2011, while Senator Babajide Omoworare represented the district from 2011 to 2019. This political tradition has over the years promoted fairness, inclusiveness and healthy political participation among the people of the district. It has equally prevented political monopoly and sustained peaceful coexistence among various interests within the constituency.

It is therefore important to humbly state that any attempt to impose or indirectly support a third-term agenda within the district may generate avoidable disaffection among party faithfuls and stakeholders who strongly believe in the existing political balance. The people of Osun East are politically conscious and highly sensitive to issues relating to equity and justice. Many loyal party members who have laboured tirelessly for the progress of the APC in difficult times now feel worried that the values of internal democracy and fairness may be compromised in favour of personal interests and political imposition.

More importantly sir, the issue surrounding the reported endorsement or handpicking of a consensus candidate allegedly influenced by Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi deserves urgent review and reconsideration. It is necessary to point out that Senator Fadahunsi remains relatively new within the progressive fold, having only recently aligned with the APC after years of political association elsewhere. While every new member deserves fair treatment and inclusion within the party, it would be politically dangerous and morally unfair for longstanding loyalists and committed party builders within Osun East to be sidelined in favour of candidates allegedly determined by external influence or personal loyalty arrangements.

Your Excellency, one of the strongest qualities that endeared you to many party faithfuls across Osun State during your tenure as Governor was your calm disposition, sense of justice and commitment to due process. These leadership qualities remain the reason many members still look up to you as the stabilizing force and Apex Leader of the APC in Osun State today. It is on this note that we passionately appeal that the process leading to the emergence of any consensus candidate in Osun East Senatorial District should be transparent, inclusive, acceptable and free from undue manipulation. Genuine consultations with leaders, elders, youth groups, women and grassroots party structures across the ten local governments in the district must be prioritized above personal interests.

Sir, the strength of every political party lies not merely in winning elections but in preserving internal unity, rewarding loyalty and protecting democratic principles. A consensus arrangement should naturally emerge from wide consultations and collective agreement among stakeholders, not through intimidation, imposition or selective endorsement. Anything short of this may deepen division within the party and weaken the confidence of party members ahead of future elections.

As committed progressives, we remain loyal to your leadership and the ideals of the All Progressives Congress. Our appeal is simply for fairness, equity and the preservation of the longstanding political tradition that has sustained peace and mutual respect within Osun East Senatorial District over the years. We trust in your wisdom and fatherly intervention to ensure that justice prevails and that every aspirant is given a level playing ground in the overall interest of our great party and the people we seek to serve.

May Almighty God continue to strengthen and guide you in the service of our nation and our dear state.

Yours faithfully,

Taiwo Olusola B Cole
