A total of 62 lives were lost in Lagos State due to fire outbreaks and building collapses between January and June 2025, according to the mid-year emergency report released by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS).
The report, released on Monday, provides a comprehensive overview of the agency’s operations during the first half of the year. It highlighted that the LSFRS responded to 1,072 emergency situations, including 922 fire incidents, two minor explosions, and 10 building collapses — eight of which were classified as partial collapses.
The Senior Public Affairs Officer of LSFRS, Maria Fadairo, disclosed in a statement that the agency also conducted 73 rescue operations and 65 salvage missions across various parts of the state.
“Between January and June 2025, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service recorded significant activity in its emergency response efforts,” the statement read. “Despite notable challenges, the Service remained committed to saving lives and protecting property.”
The agency raised alarm over the high number of hoax emergency calls, revealing that it received 315 false alerts within the six-month period — a trend it described as worrisome and disruptive to genuine emergency responses.
Amid these challenges, the LSFRS successfully rescued 252 individuals from life-threatening situations involving structural failures and fire emergencies. Nevertheless, the report confirmed that 62 people could not be saved during various tragic incidents.
The Service further reported that while property worth approximately ₦64.32 billion was salvaged during its operations, damages estimated at ₦10.72 billion were recorded, reflecting the scale of destruction witnessed in the state during the reporting period.
The LSFRS reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing emergency preparedness and public safety through continuous community engagement, prompt response, and preventive measures.
