The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, has appointed caretaker management committees to oversee the affairs of transport unions across the state following the leadership crisis that recently rocked the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The decision was reached after an emergency meeting held on Wednesday by the chairmen of the 30 Local Government Councils and the Ife East Area Office, Modakeke, with leaders of transport unions, including motorcycle and tricycle operators.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, ALGON described the crisis as a growing security concern capable of disrupting public transportation and threatening the safety of commuters across the state.
The council chairmen resolved that the suspension earlier placed on the leadership of the NURTW and all transport union activities in the state would remain in force pending further review. They stated that the action was taken in line with their constitutional responsibility over the administration of public motor parks.
To prevent disruption of transport services, ALGON announced the appointment of interim caretaker committees to oversee the affairs of the NURTW, the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Motorcycle/Tricycle Unions pending consultations with the national leadership of the affected unions for the emergence of substantive executives.
Chief Kazeem Oyewale was named Chairman of the NURTW caretaker committee, with Mutiu Ayinde as Secretary and Luqman Ahmed as Treasurer.
For RTEAN, Rasheed Ayinde was appointed Chairman, while Mufutau Adebisi and Wahab Maruf Dodo will serve as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.
The Motorcycle and Tricycle Unions will be led by Ismaila Raimi as Chairman, alongside Adebayo Tajudeen as Secretary and Tajudeen Akeem as Treasurer.
ALGON directed that all properties belonging to the respective unions be handed over to the caretaker committees and appealed to security agencies to provide adequate protection during the transition.
The association also commended the Nigeria Police Force for its prompt intervention in containing Monday’s crisis and restoring normalcy in motor parks across the state.
It further urged transport operators, stakeholders, and members of the public to cooperate with the caretaker committees to ensure the uninterrupted operation of motor parks throughout the 30 local government areas and the Ife East Area Office, Modakeke.
ALGON reaffirmed its commitment to continued dialogue with relevant stakeholders to achieve a lasting and peaceful resolution of the transport union leadership crisis in Osun State.
