Ilobu, Osun State – July 28, 2025
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, the party’s Elders’ Council, popularly known as Igbimo-Agba held a crucial meeting with governorship aspirants in Ilobu on Monday, July 28, 2025.
The closed-door session was convened to address rising tensions, promote party discipline, and chart a united course ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Elders’ Council, Engr. Sola Akinwumi, mni, urged all aspirants and stakeholders to set aside personal interests and work together for the overall good of the party. He stressed that the APC must avoid the mistakes of the past that led to its loss in the 2022 election.
Let us harness our collective energy, creativity, and passion to drive positive change,” he said. “Together, we can achieve great things. Let us move forward with purpose and determination.”
However, sources at the meeting told CivicPulseNG that behind the encouraging public tone, the elders were firm in cautioning aspirants against divisive tendencies, media rivalry, and premature campaign activities which could destabilize the party ahead of the primaries.
Observers described the meeting as more than just a formal gathering. It was a strategic move aimed at realigning the APC’s internal structure and re-establishing discipline within its ranks. With several aspirants already jostling for attention, the Elders’ Council is now expected to serve as a stabilizing force.
Discussions reportedly included:
The need to streamline the number of aspirants.
Encouraging internal consensus-building.
Ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.
Prioritizing party reconciliation and grassroots mobilization.
No official list of preferred candidates was released, but credible sources confirmed that a structured screening process is in motion.
Despite the positive tone of the gathering, party insiders admit that factional divisions remain a concern. Different groups loyal to former officer holders, influential federal appointees, and community-based blocs continue to organize parallel activities, creating confusion and mistrust within the party.
Political analysts warn that without genuine reconciliation and unity, the APC may be heading for another electoral setback in 2026—one it might not recover from easily.
According to members of Igbimo-Agba, future meetings will be more detailed and focused on performance history, party loyalty, grassroots acceptance, and leadership capacity of each aspirant.
The 2026 governorship election is shaping up to be highly competitive, and this Ilobu meeting is being seen as the APC’s first serious step toward preparing a candidate who can win not only the party’s ticket but also the confidence of the Osun electorate.
Whether this renewed push for unity will hold or give way to deeper crisis remains to be seen. But one thing is certain—the race for Osun 2026 has officially begun.
