The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Osun State has blasted a faction allegedly sponsored by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing them as “impostors and political hirelings” bent on misleading the public over local government allocations.
In a strongly worded statement, Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, the duly recognized ALGON Chairman in Osun State, declared that the so-called PDP-backed ALGON group has no legal foundation and remains unknown to the National ALGON Secretariat. He stressed that an official recognition letter dated March 17, 2025, explicitly affirms him as the only legitimate ALGON chairman in Osun State — a position further consolidated by the Akure Appeal Court judgment of February 10, 2025.
Abiodun accused the PDP government in Osun of deliberately promoting illegality by propping up the impostors through sponsored media campaigns, including the September 5, 2025, front-page publication of the Tribune Newspaper. He described the faction’s claims as propaganda and political mischief designed to destabilize local government administration.
“Our elections as council chairmen were lawfully conducted on October 15, 2022, and duly upheld by the Court of Appeal in Akure. Any other so-called ALGON group outside that judgment is nothing but a sham. They are impostors without any legal standing,” Abiodun stated.
He further dismissed allegations of illegality in council fund operations, stressing that all processes were undertaken in strict compliance with regulatory agencies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Abiodun also accused the Osun branch of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) of acting as a political appendage of the PDP and holding the system hostage through endless strikes.
“It is the height of hypocrisy for the PDP government that has consistently hijacked local government funds and denied constitutional autonomy to now parade itself as a defender of people’s money. Their so-called ALGON is nothing more than a political invention born out of desperation and fear of accountability,” he added.
Reaffirming his commitment to transparency and true local government autonomy, Abiodun assured Osun residents that the authentic ALGON under his leadership would continue to protect their constitutional rights.
“We remain the only lawful ALGON in Osun State, duly recognized at the national level. We stand on the rule of law, not propaganda. No amount of impersonation, blackmail, or media theatrics will erase the truth of our legitimacy,” he concluded.
Signed:
Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun
Osun State ALGON Chairman
