Police Arrest Kidnap Gang Leader in Benue State

A combined security team from Benue and Enugu states has arrested a suspected kidnap ringleader, identified as Yusuf Muhamed, in Orokam, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Residents said the suspect, who had allegedly been terrorising communities in the area, was identified by victims who claimed he acted as the “officer in charge of torture” at the kidnappers’ camp. They noted that Muhamed was easily recognised by his distinctive injured left hand.

Confirming the arrest, the Chairman of Ogbadibo LGA, Sunday Ajunwa, said the suspect was apprehended through the combined efforts of the police and local vigilantes.

“It is true that Yusuf has been arrested by the combined team of Police from Makurdi and Enugu, as well as the vigilantes in the area. He attempted to escape, but the youths pursued and caught him. Those he kidnapped confirmed his role in their torture while in captivity,” Ajunwa stated.

He added that Muhamed, along with 21 other suspects, is currently in police custody. The council chairman further noted that although insecurity had been a challenge in the area, the situation has improved, with a curfew still in place pending a security review.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State Command, Udeme Edet, said she had not yet received a formal report on the arrest.
