Setback for Osun PDP as Thousands of Ede Politicians Defect to AP
In what has been described as a major political realignment ahead of the 2026 governorship election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State suffered a significant blow as thousands of its members, predominantly from Ede, officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The mass defection, which took place at the APC State Secretariat in Osogbo, was led by a prominent grassroots mobilizer, Alhaji Adediran from Alajue, Ede. The event coincided with the official declaration of governorship ambition by Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, who has joined the APC and expressed readiness to vie for the party’s ticket in the upcoming gubernatorial contest.
Speaking at the well-attended gathering, Alhaji Adediran stated that the decision to leave the PDP was borne out of frustration with the current administration’s lack of direction and the need to align with a party that prioritizes development, integrity, and the welfare of the people.
“We can no longer continue to be part of a government that has failed to deliver on its promises. Our decision to join the APC is based on our conviction that this is the party that holds the future of Osun,” he said.
Receiving the defectors, the Osun APC Chairman, Hon. Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, commended their bold move, assuring them of equal opportunities and full integration into the party. He described the development as “a clear signal that the people of Osun, particularly from Ede, are ready to embrace a new political direction.”
“This is a great day for our party. The defection of these loyal sons and daughters of Ede confirms the growing popularity of the APC across Osun State. We welcome you with open arms and assure you that you will be treated as full members of our progressive family,” Lawal stated.
Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, in his declaration speech, expressed confidence in the APC’s ability to reclaim the state and deliver purposeful leadership. He pledged to run an inclusive campaign focused on economic growth, job creation, and restoration of dignity in governance.
With the latest wave of defections, political observers believe the balance of power in Osun is shifting, as the APC continues to attract disillusioned members from the ruling party in preparation for a fiercely contested 2026 gubernatorial election.
