Birthdays are deeply personal celebrations—symbolic markers of growth, reflection, and fresh beginnings. For many, it’s a day to be appreciated, to gather with loved ones, and to recognise the passage of time with gratitude and hope. Beyond the cakes and candles, birthdays also offer moments for reflection, vision, and reconnection.
It is in this spirit that I pen this tribute to celebrate a dear brother, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, as he attains the golden age of 60.
Sooko Tajudeen Olaniyi Lawal was born into a progressive family by Alhaji Yusuf Alarape Lawal and Alhaja Sinat Awero Lawal, all blessed memories. His father, Alhaji Yusuf Alarape Lawal, was a notable socialite and principled progressive politician. He suffered political persecution for his convictions, which led to his imprisonment. Remarkably, he could not attend his son’s naming ceremony and had to send the name “Tajudeen” from prison—a name that now belongs to a man who has carved his own path in the political landscape of Osun State.
From an early age, Sooko Tajudeen was interested in politics, attending Afenifere meetings as a young protégé. Since then, he has remained a committed and loyal member of the progressive political movement, never straying into anti-party activities. His loyalty was tested during the political unrest in Ile-Ife in 2001, which forced him into temporary political exile. His properties were destroyed, and his family suffered greatly, with one of his sons narrowly escaping death.
Despite these trials, Sooko Tajudeen remained resolute. In 2004, he contested for the Chairmanship under the Alliance for Democracy (AD), though he did not win. Even in defeat, he remained faithful to his ideals, resisting the temptation to switch allegiances for political gain. A man of principle, he has always chosen integrity over expediency.
A passionate party man, he believes in growth through inclusiveness. He is known for welcoming fresh ideas and embracing people of like minds to help strengthen the party. His commitment to the party’s values and vision is unwavering.
During the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, he was appointed Executive Secretary of Ife East Local Government, Ile-Ife, where he earned the nickname “Eniafe”—a person we love—for his kindness and warm disposition. Later, he served as the Commissioner for Home Affairs under Governor Gboyega Oyetola, a role he used to support others and ease economic burdens.
Sooko Tajudeen’s leadership qualities earned him the position of Acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, before being confirmed as the substantive Chairman. Since assuming that role, the party has experienced renewed strength and unity, thanks to his courageous and principled leadership.
A quintessential politician like his father, Tajudeen Lawal is admired for his simplicity, accessibility, and humility. His home is described as a political marketplace—open and welcoming to all. His willingness to learn from elders and draw from their wisdom has shaped him into a grounded and insightful leader.
His political style is marked by honesty, openness, and deep empathy for his followers. He detests divisiveness and avoids the toxic politics of slander and character assassination. His loyalty is deep-rooted, and once committed, he remains steadfast.
Fondly called Eniafe by admirers, he is blessed with a lively spirit and sharp sense of humour. His company is never dull, and he is known for his cheerfulness and generosity. While he does not harbour grudges, he remains forthright and unyielding on matters concerning the growth and progress of the party. A party man to the core.
Tajudeen Lawal attended the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), where he earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the same institution.
He began his career as an Account Clerk at DAPCEL Ventures, Gbagada, Lagos, and later served as a Business Manager at Taofik Nigeria Limited, Festac Town, Lagos.
Over the years, he has received numerous awards in recognition of his exemplary service and leadership. These include the Nigerian Local Governments Award for Excellent Performance, the NULGE State of Osun Award as Distinguished Executive Secretary, the Searchlight Merit Foundation Award for Exemplary Leadership, and the Strong Rooms of Ideas Award for Quality and Purposeful Leadership at OAU, Ile-Ife, among others.
As he celebrates his 60th birthday, I pray for continued peace of mind, robust health, and divine strength for him to continue steering the APC in Osun State towards a bright and unified future.
Happy birthday, dear brother. Wishing you long life, good health, and greater accomplishments ahead.
